TOILET area-toilet for disabled

Toilet for disabled zone should be designed taking into account a number of aspects. And so:

Maneuvering space in front of a toilet bowl should be 150 x 150 cm.

It is essential for people moving on wheelchairs to have a toilet seat set firmly on the toilet bowl and not bending while changing place from a wheelchair on the toilet seat.

Toilet for disabled should be located higher than the regular one. Recommended height of a seat (measured to the top of the seat cover) is 45-50 cm, but preferably it would be equal to the seat of a wheelchair. For detailed seat adjustment, use special pads.

Length of a toilet bowl height should be a minimum of 70 cm. This makes a person moving a wheelchair be able to set up along its edge, then move from the wheelchair onto the toilet.

A backrest should be at a distance of 55 cm from the front edge of the bowl.

Remember that a person moving in a wheelchair should be able to adjust it parallel to the toilet bowl so as change seat from the side. That is why it is so important that at least one side of the bowl to provide free space of 95 cm from the bowl to the wall. Distance from the opposite wall to the edge of the bowl should be a distance of 30 cm. This allows mounting a horizontal grab rail or L-shaped grab rail.

Use of grab rails on both sides of the toilet for disabled is necessary. Depending on the degree of user’s disability, grab rails, available in a variety of lengths, should be installed at a height of 70-85 cm. Wall rails can be permanent, tilting or tilting and folding. Handrails which are both tilting and folded adhere to the wall, making it easier to move in the bathroom – this solution is advisable for small spaces, where every inch of space matters.

In case of poor walls of a toilet or a bathroom, floor-mounted rails ought to be chosen. They provide a stable support and allow self-sufficient use of the toilet.

For people who have trouble with bending down it is recommended to use toilets with special rails for easy sitting and the folding toilet seat.

Location of the button and the system of flushing water is extremely important. The system should be located at a height of no more than 120 cm from the floor level, preferably on the side of the toilet. Installation of an automated flushing system is another option. The thing to be absolutely avoided, is installation of flushing operated with legs.

Some projects of bathrooms and toilets for disabled provides for the installation of an alarm button. In this case, it must not be forgotten to have it within the range of the disabled person.

Toilet paper dispenser should be located at a height of 60-70 cm from the floor level, at a distance of 70-90 cm from the back wall of the toilet.
